I only want to bleach part of my hair, what's the best way to control it from getting on other sections?

I know I can just section it off and put it in a clip, but there's parts where I need to bleach the ends but not the middle or roots. Could i put a thick conditioner on the parts that don't need bleaching to protect them? Or an oil treatment? Any suggestions?
